Every year teaching CER has felt like a huge struggle, UNTIL I got the opportunity to watch one of our language arts teachers teach the ACE writing strategy! I realized my students were already learning CER; they just knew it under a different name.
Draw parallels between Claim Evidence Reasoning and the ACE writing strategy students are familiar with from Language Arts to create a poster outlining the expectations of CER tasks with students. If you prefer a completed poster, one is completed for you as well.
This activity is designed to help students recognize they already have the needed skills to successfully complete CER writing tasks. As a result, students are less wary of attempting CER activities and experience more confidence in their ability.
This resource includes color and black and white versions of two posters. The first includes descriptions of part of ACE and CER. The second does not include the descriptions so that you and your students can collaborate to develop your own posters. The second set of posters can also be printed as a handout for students to keep and write the descriptions of each step in their own words.
